discussion circles: how to start a circle

In most cases starting your own circle is very much like throwing a party. Check out our circle starter page. There you'lll find many resources to help you decide what you want to do, and tips about how you can do it.

SMEI volunteers in your neighborhood will gladly walk you through this process, even in cases where no volunteer is located within a short driving distance from you.

Note: there's no commitment that a circle starter continue to be the person responsible for this circle once it starts. Actually, the circle starter need not even be a member of the circle!

in the words of a circle-starter

"At first I was apprehensive about starting a circle in my home, but I've discovered that it's the ideal solution for making sure I take the time to feed and water my soul regularly! I've always had trouble allowing myself to commit to "me" time, and having my group come to my home every week has been the perfect remedy. My SMEI mentor made it easy for me by putting up flyers, bringing people to my circle, and attending my first meetings to model how to lead a self-facilitated discussion. It's been great to get to talk to people who care about the same things I do and who provide practical advice for turning beliefs into concrete actions. I'm not the same person I was before my discussion circle - I'm calmer, more self assured, and pleased that I've found such a "simple" way to move towards a more fulfilling, sustainable lifestyle."
